Die HaydnAkademie 2010:
"The Haydn Brothers"

When talking of Joseph Haydn’s symphonies one thinks of the marvellous London Symphonies or splendid Paris Symphonies. Lovers of and experts on Haydn’s music will also recall many a Sturm und Drang symphony or one or two of his 107 symphonies. And rightly so – for despite the large number, every work is a jewel in itself. Joseph Haydn’s symphonies are simply one-of-a-kind and unmatched to the present day! It will be possible to hear these impressive treasures from Joseph Haydn in the Haydn Festival and Haydn Academy’s present concert cycle.

Yet when talking of Haydn’s symphonies – who thinks of Michael Haydn, Joseph Haydn’s younger brother, the “Salzburg Haydn”? The two brothers’ childhoods followed a similar trajectory. Both left home at the age of six to sing in the boys’ choir at St. Stephan’s Cathedral. In spite of or specifically because of this special circumstance, the two brothers remained close with one another their entire lives. If Joseph Haydn had not outdazzled his era, Michael Haydn certainly possessed the quality to be one of the “greats” of the classics and his music would be as well known as it deserves to be. With the “Haydn Brothers” concert cycle in 2010 the Haydn Academy and its conductor Anton Gabmayer will perform a series of symphonies by the two brothers Joseph and Michael Haydn from various segments of their lives, revealing the - also artistic – relationship between the composing brothers as well as the differences that can be observed, but especially how marvellous the music of BOTH of the Haydn brothers in fact is.
