Haydn Festival 2010

The Haydn Year 2009 was an important year for the Haydn Festival Eisenstadt. All over the world there were celebrations honouring the 200th anniversary of the death of the great composer Joseph Haydn. The numerous performances from his astounding oeuvre and the enormous interest on the part of the public leave no doubt that Joseph Haydn is one of the most important composers and was a brilliant experimenter.

If 2009 was the big year for Joseph Haydn, the Haydn Festival Eisentadt is taking advantage of the International Haydn Days 2010 to offer a platform for every composer honoured in an anniversary celebration in 2010. At the same time, the focus on Joseph Haydn and other composers permits a journey through the history of music: Alessandro Scarlatti (350th anniversary of his birth), Giovanni Pergolesi (300th anniversary of his birth), Luigi Cherubini and J. Ladislav Dusik (250th anniversary of their births), Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann (200th anniversary of their births), and Gustav Mahler and Isaac Albéniz (150th anniversary of their births).

As usual, during the Haydn Festival it will be possible to listen to international artists and ensembles specifically suited for the respective music: the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonic under Adam Fischer, the ECHO-prize-winning quartet casalQuartet, the Prague Chamber Orchestra under Milan Turkovic and star soloist Xavier de Maistre and Sergei Nakariakov, from Germany the Capella Augustina under Andreas Spering, the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra under Thomas Fey, the Cologne Academy under Michael Alexander Willens, the Basel Chamber Orchestra under Giovanni Antonini, the Israel Chamber Orchestra under Roberto Paternostro, Venezuelan guitarist Gabriel Guillén, Il Complesso Barocco under Alan Curtis with music enthusiast Donna Leon commenting on the pieces, the Vienna Concert Verein under Dirk Vermeulen and Julian Rachlin.

Celebrate the anniversaries of these composers’ birthdays with Joseph Haydn and with us. We are pleased to be able to welcome you to the International Haydn Days 2010 in Eisenstadt.
